What is a Steward?

Union Stewards, or Shop Stewards, are an important and vital part to any Union Local. They are the eyes, ears and voice of the Local. As representatives of CUPE in the workplace, stewards communicate on an equal footing with management.

Being a Steward is a vital job. In fact, many call it the most essential job in labour-management relations at the worksite. Without stewards to make sure management lives up to its responsibilities under the agreement, the best collective agreement would be worthless. Stewards get the satisfaction knowing they can help their co-workers solve problems. Stewards receive training in collective agreement interpretation, conflict resolution, problem solving, etc.

How to Become a Steward

So why not consider being a union steward? While you may find the role challenging, you will certainly gain satisfaction of doing an important job for your co-workers. Training and assistance is provided. You won't be working alone, but rather as a big team. Local 116 is always looking for dedicated members that want to become more active and help strengthen the Local. The more members that want to take on a greater roll, the more effective we can be in defending our members and our work. Local 116 Stewards

	Building Operations Chris Longford is your Chair of the Bargaining Committee, and is a long standing Steward. Chris works as a Landscape Technologist at the Building Operations Gardening crew.		Building Operations Ed Domenco is a Plumber at Building Operations and has been actively involved in our local as a Steward for 10 years.
	Building Operations Anne Stanton works as a Service Worker at the Life Science Building and has been a Steward for many years.		Building Operations Bill Provenzano is a Painter and has been a Steward for the past 10 years
	Trades Group Harry Easton is a sub-head Electrician for the Fire Life and Safety group; He has been at UBC for 34 years and is one of your Bargaining Committee members.		Building Operations Jim McKay is a Glazer at Building Operations and has been actively involved in the Union for several years.
	Campus Security Andrew Wong has been with the University for 10 years now and an active Steward for the past two.		Student Housing Services John Square-Briggs is a Plumber in Student Housing and has been a Steward for the last 6 years.
	Campus Security Nick Sagliocco has been with the University for six years and a Shop Steward for two. Nick works at the Museum of Anthropology.		Campus Security Glenn McNeil started at the University in 1988 and has been an active Steward for many years.
	Parking and Access Marlene Marshall is a clerk 2 and has been at UBC since 2000. Marlene is also an Executive Council member		Campus Security Edmond Quan has been a Steward for two years and has been with his Department for 6 years.
	Dentistry Evangeline Jonassen is a Dental Assistant in the Department of Dentistry and has been a steward for several years.		Building Operations Sean David is a Steward and works as a Labourer at the Landscape shop. Sean is also a member of your Bargaining Committee.
	Dentistry Laurel Tulloch is a Dental Assistant in the Department of Dentistry and is a new steward to our local.		Building Operations Chris Edwards is a new Steward. Chris is a mechanic at Building Operations and has worked at UBC since 2000.
	Building Operations Gregg Doughty is a sub-head Landscape Technologist and has been an active Steward since 1999 and has worked on Campus since 1991.		Mining Engineering Keith Jellis is a Tech 4 at Mining Engineering. Keith has been a Steward for 5 years and is an active safety committee member.
	Building Operations Chris Kalbfleish is currently working at Building Operations as a certified Gardener he has been a Steward for the past 2 years.		Physics and Astronomy Nick Lemmel has worked in the Instrument Machine Shop since 2003 and has been a tool and die machinist for 17 years. Nick has been a Steward since 2006.
	Food Services Laura Lowry is currently in her 35th year of working at UBC all with Food Services and has been a Steward helping our members for the past 12 years.		GSS Koerner Pub Julie Wallis is a Steward at the GSS Pub representing our members who serve and bartend at the Koerner Pub.
	Food Services Beata (Betty) Nielson has been with the University since 1990. A relatively new Steward. Betty can be found at the new Ike Barber Cafe.		Food Services Peter Brien has been with us since 1992 and works at the new White Spot Restaurant. Peter is a new Steward.
	Food Services Brett Small is an Assistant Cook at Sage Bistro. A new employee at UBC, young worker and a new steward. Brett is looking forward to becoming more active in the Local.
