Union Stewards, or Shop Stewards, are an important and vital part to any Union Local. They are the eyes, ears and voice of the Local. As representatives of CUPE in the workplace, stewards communicate on an equal footing with management.
Being a Steward is a vital job. In fact, many call it the most essential job in labour-management relations at the worksite. Without stewards to make sure management lives up to its responsibilities under the agreement, the best collective agreement would be worthless. Stewards get the satisfaction knowing they can help their co-workers solve problems. Stewards receive training in collective agreement interpretation, conflict resolution, problem solving, etc.
So why not consider being a union steward? While you may find the role challenging, you will certainly gain satisfaction of doing an important job for your co-workers. Training and assistance is provided. You won't be working alone, but rather as a big team. Local 116 is always looking for dedicated members that want to become more active and help strengthen the Local. The more members that want to take on a greater roll, the more effective we can be in defending our members and our work.
