Last fall, AMS Security Officers at the Studen Union Building successfully organized and became new members of COPE Local 378. Soon after, representatives from COPE 378 and the AMS entered into negotiations to bargain their first Collective Agreement. As the Parties struggled to reach agreement on a number of key issues such as respectful wages and outsourcing provisions, a Mediator was brought in to assist.

Sergeant Smith from the RCMP Labour Liaison Office in Vancouver will be attending our Union meeting on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 4:00 pm in Room 214/216 at the Student Union Building, to give the membership an overview on how to run a picket line, and the legal requirements involved in successful job action.

Bargaining Update
March 21st, 2012

In late February, CUPE's Universities Coordinated Bargaining Committee, made up of locals at UBC, UNBC, SFU, UVIC, RRU, and TRU met to discuss the BC Liberal government's latest budget and impact on post-secondary collective bargaining. In that budget, the government outlined a few details about the new "cooperative gains" mandate for public sector bargaining. Essentially, public sector organizations will be required to find savings in order to boost salaries.

Your Bargaining Committee met with the University on Thursday and Friday of last week. We have now fully canvassed all of our non-monetary proposals. This Thursday, March 15th, we will be conducting a strike vote in order to maximize our leverage as we come to discuss monetary items with the University. The strike vote will be held: Thursday March 15th, 6am - 8pm, Maple Room - Ponderosa Centre, 2071 West Mall on Campus.

On February 22nd, your CUPE 116 Bargaining Commmittee hosted a Town Hall membership meeting at the S.U.B. from 7am through 7pm. This information session was well attended by members from across the Campus, including Technicians, Patrol Officers, Food Service Staff, Building Service Workers and Dental Assistants, to name just a few; who came out to meet with their Committee to ask questions about our bargaining and to share their views on the issues that matter most to them.

Aquatic Centre

February 20th, 2012

Your CUPE 116 Bargaining Committee met with the University on Thursday, February 16th to continue contract negotiations at the Aquatic Centre. The Union tabled our monetary package which included proposals to improve provisions such as scheduling, clothing allowance, recertification and tuition fee benefits. In response, the Employer introduced their new 'Cooperative Gains' bargaining mandate for 2012. This new mandate does not provide for increased provincial funding to support public services, but rather, directs Provincial Sector Employers to identify cost savings through an internal review process. The university's Board of Governors has adopted this new mandate and has begun such a review at UBC.

Update
February 14th, 2012

Your Bargaining Committee will be hosting an information session for the membership on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 in Room 207/209 at the Student Union Building. The information session will be open at 7:00am and remain open until 7:00pm to allow all CUPE members the opportunity to attend before work, during their breaks or after work to meet with their Bargaining Committee. In addition, the Bargaining Committee will be presenting detailed presentations at 7:30am, 11:30am, 4:00pm and 6:30pm. Refreshments will be provided.
