Who Are We? We were certified as a Union in 1942. Our inital membership numbers are unknown, but to date, we have expanded to 1927 members strong. We are represented all over campus in all areas. We are Custodial Services, Dental Assistants, IT Services, Machinists, Mail Clerks, Stores Keepers, Carpenters, Electricians, Sheet Metal Workers, Plumbers, Steam Fitters, Plasterers, Upholsterers, Painters, Locksmiths, Bricklayers, Mechanical Maitenance, Gardeners, Mechanics, Sign Makers and Labourers. As well as Food Services, Parking and Access, Campus Security, Life Guards, Landscape Technologists, Book Store Employees and over 300 Engineering and Research Technicians working in labs and shops at the Point Grey campus and remote sites. Our Affiliations All CUPE Locals are members of CUPE National. The National Union services all CUPE Locals with resources such as legal services. As well, you may have noticed our National Servicing Rep, Dianne Jolly at some of our union meetings. Her job is to provide advice to our executive as well as assist in getting access to services that the National Union provide. Locals can choose to affiliate with other organizations.CUPE 116 is a proud member of CUPE BC which is the Provincial Division of CUPE National. CUPE BC has an executive and staff just like our Local and they work to advocate on issues and causes specific to CUPE BC affiliates. Several CUPE 116 activists sit on CUPE BC committees and represent our members. As well we are affiliated with CUPE Metro, the Vancouver District Labour Council (VDLC) and the BC Federation of Labour (BC Fed). |
Calendar of Events Every 2 years our society holds a summertime family picnic. It is a great opportunity to see co-workers away from the workplace and meet their families. The society also hosts our bi-annual retirement dinner where the Union wishes our retiring members well as they embark on their new endeavors and thank them for their many years of service. Every April 28th we honor workers around the world who have lost their lives on the job or due to industrial disease. We encourage members to join us at our CUPE 116 memorial site between the Chan Center and the Rose Garden. Union Meetings Union meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month (except for July and August) at the Barn Coffee Shop at 4:00PM. These meetings are where the Locals business is conducted. Motions are raised and then the membership gets to discuss the motion and then vote on that motion. Because after all, the Local isn't just the executive and the stewards. It is the members that make the Local. It is also a good time to get together with your fellow brothers and sisters, have a coffee and become updated on what your Local is doing and have your voice heard. |
The day to day activites of the Local are run by the executive. The executive is made up of members who let their name stand for nomination and who are elected into a position. The current CUPE 116 Executive members are:
