Dec. 15th, 2009 - Vancouver and District Labour Council 17th Annual Robbie Burns Dinner

The Vancouver and District Labour Council was instrumental in creating the Morning Program at Queen Alexandra Elementary School in 1992. The Morning Program was started to create a safe haven for many students who arrived at the inner city school as early as 7 am. The Program provides the children with not only a safe, sheltered, supervised place to gather, but also provides activities and a nutritious breakfast to help the kids prepare for the day.

Dec. 8th, 2009 - UBC Faculty, Staff, Students Join Forces to Fight Back Against Bill 21

Barry O'Neill, President of CUPE BC

CUPE members, staff, faculty, and community activists
came together in front of the Goddess of Democracy at UBC
to rally against “Bill 21” yesterday at noon hour.

Colleen Garbe, President of CUPE Local 116, said,
“All people have certain rights, and in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, we have the right to free Collective Bargaining. It is the government’s job to protect natural rights, not strip the people of them.”

Tim Chu, Vice President of the UBC Alma Mater Society, said, “It is shameful that Paramedics, who save lives, are forced to work on-call for $2 an hour.”

Elizabeth Hodgson, President of the UBC Faculty Association, made links with the struggle of Paramedics and the round of bargaining for many public sector workers in 2010, and committed to demand the right to free collective bargaining,

“No bargaining is no bargain.”

CUPE BC President Barry O’Neill said,

“It may be cold right now, but I can guarantee to Kevin Falcon and Gordon Campbell that things are going to really heat up over the next few months if this government continues to deny basic rights to workers.”

Dr. Elizabeth Hodgson, President
UBC Faculty Association
